What's Up in Garden - Pulsatilla

Written By:  Dr. Loreen Dawson, ND

Pulsatilla is always one of the first plants to flower in the garden.  Its delicate purple blooms and bright yellow stamens remind us of Easter colours and give pulsatilla its common name pasque flower.

Pulsatilla has some unique properties and is used both in herbal medicine and homeopathic medicine.  As an herbal medicine, it is remarkably beneficial for spasms and cramps in the reproductive system including the ovaries, uterus and testes.  It is also used in tiny doses to help people who are exhausted, but cannot sleep due to anxiety, nervousness or stress.

Pulsatilla is one of the more common homeopathic remedies.  It is particularly suited for people who are soft and delicate in nature, yet physically hardy, like the flower.  It is a commonly used remedy in colds, coughs and allergies, where the specific symptoms match the homeopathic indications.  Like the herbal remedy, homeopathic preparations can be very helpful in cases of menstrual cramps.

Fresh pulsatilla is poisonous, and should never be ingested, but, properly prepared, it is a powerful, and unique medicine in our garden.

This information is not intended to be used for self-treatment.  Pulsatilla, like all herbal remedies, must be used in the correct dose, and in the right combination with other plants.  Please consult a naturopathic physician or registered herbalist before using this or any other herbal medicine.
